Developer Dreamlords Digital is taking its new game to Kickstarter and asking for $40,000 to take you to hell. Well, part of hell.
Graywalkers: Purgatory is a new tactical turn-based 3D role-playing game that takes place in a supernatural post-apocalyptic world, where parts of heaven, hell and Earth have merged together in an event called “The Rupture.” The company cites games such as X-Com, Jagged Alliance, Fallout, Baldur’s Gate, and Civilization as inspiration for the title.
This will be the second attempt at raising funds for Graywalkers. In their first Kickstarter, Dreamlords asked for $100,000. They were only able to raise $42,769. It will be interesting to see what the developer learned from their last attempt at raising funds.
Graywalkers will feature two modes at launch with the possibility of a multiplayer component added if stretch goals are reached. The campaign mode features a single-player epic storyline. The other mode included in the game will be the “freeform” mode. Freeform mode will “be a single player experience where everything is procedurally generated and your measure for success is affected by influence, resources and power.”
The game is currently in the pre-alpha stage. If the Kickstarter is successful, Dreamlords Digital expects it to take about 18 months to complete the game. That would mean there would be an estimated release date of January 2016.
Graywalkers will also feature a robust set of community features. The biggest of which will allow users to contribute content such as 3D models, 2D art, music, sound effects, and animations to the game.
One of the most promising aspects of Graywalkers is its claim of emergent gameplay. Each of the actions your character takes will shape the overall economy and politics of the world. An example used in a developer diary on YouTube talked about stealing food from a village. Eventually, that village would collapse due to there not being any food for them to survive on.
So who are Dreamlords Digital? The company is a direct-to-digital development studio based out Las Vegas and Manila who specialize in game development and “gamified” apps. The company is relatively young with less than three years of existence, and have worked on titles such as Rock Band 3 (Wii), The Incredibles (PC), and Spider-Man (GBA) among others.
A project like this sounds very ambitious for the $40,000 that the company is asking for. With lofty ambitions and a staff of ten people, will the money they’re asking for be enough?
Graywalkers: Purgatory will be releasing for PC (Windows, Mac & Linux) and will offer both Steam and DRM-free versions. If you pledge at least $20 you’ll get a copy of the game. In the future (depending on funding) the company would like to bring the game to the PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Xbox One, Ouya, and iOS 7/Kitkat tablets.
The game will be hitting Steam’s Early Access program once Dreamlord’s has a “solid, playable, full alpha version.” For those of you interested, there is currently a playable demo available to download on the Graywalkers Kickstarter page.
So far the campaign has raised $14,621 and has 32 days to go.
